The students learn about kindness in their daily classes, in addition to their regular studies, and that is an important part of educating students.

"So for them to start to understand how ... what they say could have an effect on the rest of their lives is really big". Over the past 11 years, it's grown into a national day of anti-bullying awareness. The school has crafted quilts constructed of student drawings that depict acts of kindness and teachers have given anti-bullying lessons.

"It's a common thing around the world", Meena said.

Shapka echoed these thoughts, saying the sender can struggle to have empathy and compassion for the recipient of their messages.

"It's interesting how it has filtered through the grades", she said.

"I think today's announcement is about doing more and working more closely with parent organizations so they can be aware of some of the perils of social media and how cyber bullying can be targeting their kid and they may not even be aware of it", said Fleming.

At Sierra View, students participated in a kindness month. "Now it's about doing something; it's about what are we actually going to do".

In spite of these increases in online bullying, Shapka explained that many youth choose to not tell an adult if it's happening to them.

"They really worry that parents won't get it or they'll have a knee-jerk reaction of just taking the technology away", she said. "Social responsibility does need to extend to an online environment".

She says those wearing pink today are showing support for those who are going through a hard situation.

"As a school we believe in standing up to bullies and supporting kids in every way possible", said Chippendale, in his letter.

"Since 2007, we have honoured their leadership by wearing pink".
