"It will be very windy everywhere and very cold - temperatures will stay below freezing for much of the country".

Extreme weather left United Kingdom drivers stranded and more roads impassable overnight - with another day of sub-zero temperatures, icy blasts and "blizzard-like" conditions to come.

Storm Emma, as named by the Portuguese Met service, is coming in from the south and is on collision course with the Beast from the East, looking set to drag more bitter weather to the United Kingdom on Friday.

"And, we don't know yet how long it is going to last".

The whole of the United Kingdom is covered in weather warnings, following latest updates by the Met Office.

Forecasters have issued a rare red weather alert, warning that extreme snow and wind which could pose a risk to lives is heading to parts of Wales and south-west England.

Ten RAF 4x4s and crews have been provided to transport health staff to hospitals and to vulnerable people in Lincolnshire after every major road in the county was blocked by snow.

"Some rural communities might be cut off for several days".

"By the end of Friday, parts of Wales and western England could have 10-15cm of snow on the ground, 15-20cm locally in north-west England, and up to 30cm in central Scotland".

More snow is expected Thursday and Friday.

Amber warnings for snow are in place for much of Scotland and the south west.

On Wednesday as icy blasts gripped Britain, a man in his 60s died after being pulled from a lake in Danson Park, south east London that he had fallen into.

This beast has hailed from the east.

Firefighters also rescued a young boy who had tried to run into the middle of a frozen lake and got trapped as the ice broke up at Laindon near Basildon, Essex.

Meanwhile hundreds of schools across the country were forced to close for the second day in a row, including more than 125 schools in North Yorkshire, more than 330 across Kent and all schools and colleges in the Republic of Ireland.

Rail services have also been mired by delays with Paddington Station announcing it will be closed from 8am due to severe weather conditions, halting Heathrow Express services.

The runway at East Midlands Airport was temporarily closed on Thursday morning, and travellers were warned it could affect flights.

Police across the country also advised motorists to avoid driving if possible owing to poor visibility and treacherous conditions.

'It is the coldest air we have seen over the United Kingdom at this time of the year since around 1991, Becky Mitchell, a meteorologist at Britain's Met Office, said.

Mr Snell said: "Generally many places on Thursday will struggle to get anywhere near -1C (30F), a few people will come up above, but many of us will be firmly below freezing".
