Armed Bandits Massacre 27 Villagers in Kaduna

The death toll of an armed bandit attack in Nigeria has risen to 58 - up from 45 earlier reported - as officials and villagers comb bushes, a local chief said on Monday.

Responding to the unfortunate incident, the presidency said it has approved the creation of two new Police Headquatrers in the area.

To defend themselves, villages and herdsmen form vigilante groups, but they too are often accused of extra-judicial killings, provoking a bloody cycle of retaliatory attacks.

"The IGP and the GOC were here and have confirmed the establishment of a Battalion of the army and Police Area Command".

Kaduna police, in its statement, said it has taken cognizance of the murders and launched an operation to crackdown on the armed bandits involved in the crime.

He said that the policemen were detailed to comb the area for the killers and other criminals. Group lauds vigilantes, volunteers In a related development, the Birnin Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance has commended the "resilience of the courageous vigilantes and volunteers".

State Governor Nadir el-Rufai said he has been engaging with the federal government on the matter and that he has directed the State Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials to those affected.

Residents have demanded that President Muhammadu Buhari's government urgently deploy more police and military to protect vulnerable villages on the state border with Zamfara. The armed bandits later burnt down completely the village of about 3,000 inhabitants.

He commended the local vigilante groups and security agencies in the search and evacuation efforts, adding that more people are still missing. But he never did up till the time of fi ling in this report.
