VC asks AMU students to get back to studies, union rejects plea

Over a dozen students had sustained injuries in the police action.

The row erupted last week when BJP MP Satish Gautam objected to the portrait of Pakistan founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah, which has been hanging on the walls of the student union office for decades.

Modi's response comes just days after a Hindu outfit in Aligarh demanded the removal of a portrait of the "Father of Pakistan" from a meeting hall. Ali Jinnah and if they do so, it would be wrong.

At an event in Lahore, Aiyar had reportedly said V D Savarkar was the first proponent of the two-nation theory and invented the term "Hindutva" to create religious divide in the society. This aims to address the students' demands pertaining to the violence on the campus on May 2.

AMU officials have said that Mr Jinnah was a founder member of the university's court and was granted life membership of the student union. According to Aligarh SSP Ajay Kumar Sahini, heavy force has been deployed outside the campus. He further clarified that there was no proposal for closing the University as the situation yet does not warrant it.

Resistance Movement win landslide victory in Lebanon elections
The daily al-Akhbar newspaper, which leans toward Hezbollah, described the election as a "slap" for Hariri on its front page. The worldwide community, he said, should look at the results in a "positive way" because they reflect democracy in Lebanon.

He also said University authorities were in constant touch with district authorities and holding regular talks with protesting students. "We categorically condemn this action of the Indian police, and request the government of India to take appropriate action against the erring policemen and extremist Hindu activists". he said.

Gupta said precautionary measures have been enforced and police patrolling in all sensitive areas intensified.

They allegedly tried to breach peace by posting inflammatory material on social media, prompting the administration to temporarily suspend internet service in the city.

An executive member of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and Imam of Lucknow Idgah Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahali had stated that Jinnah was responsible for the division of the country and as such his portrait should be removed from the AMU campus.
