Mariners, Tigers split double dip

DETROIT (AP) - Robinson Cano hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Seattle Mariners slugged their way to a 9-5 victory over Detroit on Saturday night, salvaging a split of their doubleheader with the Tigers.

Detroit Tigers catcher John Hicks safely beats the relay throw to Seattle Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager during the fourth inning of game one of a baseball doubleheader, Saturday, May 12, 2018, in Detroit.

Cano was struck by an 88 miles per hour fastball from left-hander Blaine Hardy in the third inning.

Utility man Andrew Romine replaced Cano at second base following the hit by pitch. The defeat marked the first time all season that Seattle lost a series on the road, but the bigger issue is the health of the Mariners' standout second baseman. He hit 39 home runs in 2016, although that number dipped to 23 a season ago. Mike Leake has not been that good for the Mariners this year, but he had a nice outing against the Jays as he allowed just two ERs on six hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings of work.

Cano went more than 10 years between stints on the disabled list when the Mariners placed him on the 10-day DL because of a strained right quad muscle last May. "I went out there trying to go as deep as I possibly can".

Paul Bettany is having quite the year as the actor will be appearing in two of this year's biggest films. The film premiered on Thursday night in Los Angeles to a standing ovation, according to Vanity Fair .

Pitching Probables: James Paxton (2-1, 3.40 ERA) will toe the slab for the Mariners and the Tigers will counter with Blaine Hardy (0-0, 2.70 ERA).

Dee Gordon grounded out to first to end it.

Mahtook's RBI double made it 4-2 in the seventh, but Seattle tied it the following inning against Joe Jimenez. On Saturday, Castellanos had two hits.

Castellanos was hit in the first inning by a pitch from Seattle starter Felix Hernandez. He has allowed just one ER on 11 hits in 10.1 innings of work in those games. The Mariners are putting up 4.64 runs per game while allowing 4.61 per contest.

The Mariners have hit 14 home runs in their last 10 games.
