Salmonella Outbreak Sickens More People Following Multi-State Egg Recall

Thirty-five people have been sickened by a salmonella outbreak linked to the recall of almost 207 million eggs, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an update this week. So far, no deaths have been reported.

The outbreak was originally announced April 16 and traced to eggs from Rose Acre Farms, which suffered three similar incidents in 1990 that left 450 people in three states sick.

Six people in Pennsylvania have gotten sick from a national shell egg salmonella outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Public health officials expect additional cases to be confirmed because of the lag time from the time a person develops symptoms to the time the CDC receives confirmation lab reports and notifications from state and local officials.

Two dead after light aircraft crashes in Offaly
The crashed aircraft was found approximately 2 kilometres from the Clonbullogue Airfield they had departed from earlier. Eddie Fitzpatrick, a local councillor, added the airfield is popular for parachuting and "fundraising jumpers".

The outbreak is linked to North Carolina's Rose Acre Farms, whose eggs were distributed to restaurants or sold at major grocery stores such as Walmart and Food Lion. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella Braenderup can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

The symptoms, which include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, take about 12-72 hours after exposure to take effect. The eggs were sold by Walmart, among other leading US retailers, and were recalled on April 13. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) investigators inspected the Hyde County, N.C., farm and collected samples for testing.

Salmonella can cause serious and even deadly infections in children or elderly adults. Authorities said the DeCosters' company, Quality Egg, sold eggs contaminated with Salmonella enteriditis to several states and bribed an inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in an attempt to sell eggs that were "red tagged" for failing to meet minimum industry standards.

Chickens can pass the bacteria to eggs because eggs leave hens through the same passageway as feces.
