BlacKkKlansman, Cannes Film Festival

The 28-year-old actress, best known for her work in Spider-Man: Homecoming, is at the festival for the premiere of her movie BlacKkKlansman, which earned a long standing ovation.

"BlacKkKlansman is a nuanced story of race in America, but Lee doesn't take any chances with vagueness or ellipses, nor should he".

The preview opens with Stallworth becoming the first black cop in Colorado Springs, and he quickly decides he wants to make a big difference. That, of course, required the help of another fellow (white) cop, played in the film by Adam Driver, who steps into "play" Stallworth when it's time to meet the hate group.

One day he sees an ad in the local newspaper about how people can find out more information about the Klu Klux Klan and he calls the number.

Although it's set almost four decades ago, Lee has multiple references to current U.S. president Donald Trump in the film - ending it with footage of the former Celebrity Apprentice host refusing to condemn the actions of the white supremacists behind the deadly Charlottesville riot.

He then sends his colleague Flip to meet with the Klansmen and infiltrate the organization. He starts by building a relationship over the phone with KKK leader David Duke (played by Topher Grace).

The film juxtaposes the rise of the Black Power movement alongside the white supremacist rhetoric of the KKK.

While Peele initially considered directing the film himself, he eventually came to realize that Lee should be the director.

They were joined at the event by cast members Damaris Lewis, Jasper Paakkonen, and John David Washington.
