Facebook Removed 2.5 Million Pieces of Hate Speech in the First Quarter

The content audited included graphic violence, hate speech, adult nudity and sexual activity, spam, terrorist propaganda (IS, al-Qaeda and affiliates) and fake accounts. Within each category are bar graphs showing how many pieces of said content were removed by moderation, including how many were removed by Facebook's automatic detection technology.

It took down 21 million pieces of adult nudity and sexual activity in Q1 2018 - the company's systems had already flagged 96% before being reported.

These metrics may seem high, but when you consider the massive amount of both accounts and content that are going through Facebook each day, it's a relatively small fraction of the entirety of the social media platform. Facebook said more than 98 percent of the accounts were caught before users reported them.

Facebook's vice president of product management Guy Rosen said more work needed to be done to improve such detection tools. However, the company estimates that between 3% and 4% of the active accounts on its service are fake. However Facebook still removed 2.5 million pieces of hate speech in Q1 2018, 38% of which was flagged by its technology.

On the other hand, Facebook only took down 2.5 million posts containing hate speech. While the company seems to be very proficient at removing nudity and terrorist propaganda, it's lagging behind when it comes to hate speech.

As Mark said at F8 we have a lot of work still to do to prevent abuse.

United States to help North Korea's economy if it denuclearizes
North Korea for decades has been pushing a concept of "denuclearization" that bears no resemblance to the American definition. That means Trump's stewardship of the nuclear crisis is now far more popular than the President himself, the network said.

The figure represents between 0.22 and 0.27 per cent of the total content viewed by Facebook's more than two billion users from January through March.

While artificial intelligence is able to sort through nearly all spam and content glorifying al-Qaeda and ISIS and most violent and sexually explicit content, it is not yet able to do the same for attacks on people based on personal attributes like race, ethnicity, religion, or sexual and gender identity, the company said in its first ever Community Standards Enforcement Report.

"For example, artificial intelligence isn't good enough yet to determine whether someone is pushing hate or describing something that happened to them so they can raise awareness of the issue".

"Today's report gives you a detailed description of our internal processes and data methodology".

Meanwhile, Facebook said on Monday it has suspended around 200 apps as part of its investigation into whether companies misused personal user data gathered from the social network.

The report also covers fake accounts, which has gotten more attention in recent months after it was revealed that Russian agents used fake accounts to buy ads to try to influence the 2016 elections.
