Iraq PM Congratulates Sadr on Election Win, Suggests Need for Recount

Describing Abadi as a figure who has the support of both Iran and the United States, Shargh wrote, "Even though Abadi achieved significant domestic and worldwide success through the victory over Daesh [Islamic State], he failed to overcome economic problems, and this caused him not to achieve the results he expected in this election".

But after 14 years, more than $1 trillion, millions of Iraqi dead and thousands of US troops killed and maimed, the USA now has less influence over Iraq than it had while former Central Intelligence Agency operative Saddam Hussein was in power. The militias, known collectively as the Hashd Shaabi, are key conduit of influence for Iran into Iraq and Syria, where Tehran has sent many of them to fight.

An alliance of candidates linked to Iraq's powerful Shiite paramilitary groups was in second.

Al-Amiri maintains close ties to Iran.

Sadr is one of the few Iraqi politicians who is opposed to both the presence of American troops in Iraq and the overbearing influence neighbouring Iran exercises over the country. In 2014, he reorganized his fighters under the name the Peace Brigades — Saraya Salam.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said that a manual recount of Saturday's national election results should be held if there is evidence that the new electronic voting system has proven unreliable.

She conceded that "it is certainly anything but ideal" and acknowledged that there are many other issues of concern with Iran. Riad Hadi, an Iraqi army veteran, said Iraq will end up paying the price for Trump's withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

Al-Abadi's signature achievement was expelling Islamic State militants from Mosul, a Nineveh city, in 2017. Iraqi people are likewise fed up with the US occupation and Iranian meddling. Abadi has said he is ready to work with the victor of the election. Al-Abadi's Nasr (Victory) Coalition was considered the front-runner, but ended up in third place.

"His visit coincided with the announcement of the election results". It released the results of six more provinces late Monday.

He was followed by Amiri with more than 1.2 million votes, translating into around 47 seats, and Abadi with more than 1 million votes and about 42 seats. Though this started with claims of mistakes in Kirkuk, Abadi wants it expanded nationwide.

Also on Tuesday, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) called on IHEC to recount votes manually due to concerns from some Kurdish political parties over the preliminary elections results in the Kurdistan Region.

Members of the election commission read out vote tallies for each candidate list in 10 provinces on national TV.
