Turkey expels Israeli consul in spat over Gaza violence

More than 60 Palestinians have been killed and over 2,000 others wounded in clashes with Israeli security troops since Monday on the border between Israel and Gaza, amid mass demonstrations to protest over the USA embassy opening in Jerusalem.

According to diplomatic sources speaking on condition of anonymity, the ministry told Sfari to leave following indiscriminate violence and killings by Israeli soldiers along the Gaza border.

The foreign ministry has told the consul to leave Turkey "for a period of time", the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

On Monday, Erdogan, who is in London for three-day official talks, spoke to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas over the phone.

Israel expelled the Turkish consul-general in Jerusalem, and Erdogan exchanged heated words on Twitter with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Iraq PM Congratulates Sadr on Election Win, Suggests Need for Recount
Members of the election commission read out vote tallies for each candidate list in 10 provinces on national TV. Al-Abadi's signature achievement was expelling Islamic State militants from Mosul, a Nineveh city, in 2017.

Turkey has previously expelled Israel's Ambassador Eitan Na'eh and recalled its ambassadors from Tel Aviv and Washington.

They also discussed possible steps to be taken over Israeli violence ahead of a planned emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Friday in Istanbul.

Elton Naeh, the ambassador, had only been in his post since December 2016, after a reconciliation deal earlier that year ended a dispute over the May 2010 deadly storming of a Turkish ship by Israeli commandos that saw relations downgraded for more than half a decade.

Since the Gaza rallies kicked off on March 30, scores of Palestinian demonstrators have been killed - and thousands injured - by Israeli troops deployed along the other side of the border.
