Co-pilot 'sucked halfway' out of cockpit of Airbus

Liu said he had to fly the plane manually because the automatic systems malfunctioned.

The captain looked to his right and saw the right windshield was gone after a deafening roar tore through the cockpit, which lost pressure, with the temperature dropping rapidly as well.

A co-pilot for Sichuan Airlines flight 3U8633 was partially sucked out of a plane on Monday after one of the front windshields busted open, according to Chinese media reports.

Despite the fact that the cockpit's temperature suddenly dropped to minus 40 degree Celsius, captain Liu Chuanjian safely landed the Airbus A319 after the mid-air emergency over south-western China yesterday morning.

Mr Liu had to land the Airbus A319 immediately, a task made more hard because the instruments malfunctioned and it was too loud to use the radio.

According to Sichuan Airlines, the co-pilot sustained scratches on the face and minor injuries on the waist, one female passenger had minor injuries on the waist.

An unnamed passenger told China News Service: 'The crew were serving us breakfast when the aircraft began to shake.

With two high-profile instances of cracked windows on planes in a month, how does this happen, how frequently do windshields shatter, and what is the protocol for pilots in these emergency incidents? While some netizens asked for rewarding the captain, others called for better safety measures.

Flight 8633 left Chongqing, southwest of the Chinese capital of Beijing, just before 6:30 a.m. local time Monday (6:30 p.m. ET Sunday). A similar incident occurred on an Atlasglobal flight from Istanbul to north Cyprus past year.

The harrowing incident comes almost a month after a woman on a Southwest Airlines flight from NY died after shrapnel from a blown engine smashed the window, forcing out part of her body as other passengers pulled her back in.

The cockpit windshield is a very important part of an aircraft and may be the strongest glass on the craft. China said that the way pilot Liu Chuanzhi made the plane successfully landing in the twenty minutes at 800-900 kilometers per hour, it was extremely hard.

Pictures published by government-run Chengdu Economic Daily showed the plane missing one of its cockpit windows and damage to its cockpit controls. "People were shocked", an unidentified passenger said.

An initial statement from Sichuan Airlines stated that the incident had been caused by a failure of the flight control unit.

China Aviation Review Tweeted that the pilot diverted to the Chinese city of Chengdu and made an emergency landing, after battling extreme cold, wind, and the absence of some instruments!
